A Gym also known as a Gymnasium, is a covered location for gymnastics, athletics and gymnastic services.
In general, Gymnasium is a large room with equipment for exercising the body and increasing strength, or simply to stay fit.
The word GYM is derived from the ancient Greek gymnasium.”Gym” is also slang for the fitness centre, which is often an area for indoor recreation.
The evolution of fitness can be credited to man’s need for survival and can be traced back to the beginning of mankind where people would remain physically fit in order to hunt and survive.
The first Gymnasiums in history were dated back to 3000 years ago, in ancient Persia, where they were known as “zurkhanch”, as area that encouraged physical fitness.
But gyms mainly come into existence in ancient Greece. The ancient greek gymnasiums were places where athletics were trained for public games such as the Olympics. After this, the gym industry disappeared for centuries.
Until, 19th century, when schools and colleges started building gymnasiums, It got a major boost in the 1990s when fitness was associated with gyms and people starting making it a priority of their life.
With the entry of technology in the fitness domain, the current structure of the market is in the midst of a major overhaul making way for more consolidation in the market.
